The Overview of electrochemical water treatment technology

The electrochemical is the scientific which is studying the relationship of electric and chemical reaction and electrochemical technology is one kind of technology which is based on the  base physical of electrochemical solving the practical problems. From the perspective of energy conversion, if  the energy released by the chemical reaction is converted into electrical energy and output to form a battery,this is the base working principle of chemical power technology;if the electrical energy is  converted into chemical energy, a chemical reaction is initiated to form an electrolytic cell, this is Basic working principle of electrolytic technology. 


   Electrochemical technology is applied in the field of water treatment, which is mainly based on the principle of electrolysis. The basic schematic diagram is shown in Figure 1. The components and equipment related to electrochemical water treatment technology are mainly electrodes, electrolytic cells and power supplies. These three parts are the core content of electrochemical water treatment technology.

(1)   Electrode

The electrode is an intermediary between the external circuit and the electrolyte, and the area near the electrode surface is where the electrochemical reaction occurs. When electrochemical technology is used to treat water, the water to be treated is the electrolyte. The electrochemical reaction mainly occurs near the contact surface between the electrode and the electrolyte. The type of reaction and related parameters are determined by the characteristics of the two. Therefore, in practical applications, different electrodes need to be selected according to the characteristics of the water and the problem to be solved.The electrode is the core of the electrochemical treatment technology. In basic research, the development of new electrode materials is the unremitting pursuit of electrode technology research; In industrial applications, the screening and manufacturing of electrodes can best reflect the technical strength of the enterprise. The key to the success of electrochemical technology is to choose the right electrode. For example, electro-flocculation technology can use aluminum electrodes and iron electrodes, while pulsed electric Fenton technology requires Fe2 + to participate, so aluminum electrodes cannot be used; In the electrocatalytic advanced oxidation technology, the iridium oxide coated electrode has almost no ring opening effect, and the lead dioxide anode can open the benzene ring smoothly. Therefore, in the industrial application of electrochemical water treatment technology, according to the actual situation, it is necessary to select and manufacture suitable electrodes that can meet industrial applications, which is also the most basic requirement for electrochemical technology companies. (2)Electrolytic cell

An electrolytic cell is a device that converts electrical energy into chemical energy, and is also a container that holds electrodes and water for electrochemical reactions. The design and manufacture of the electrolytic cell is the second core content of the electrochemical water treatment technology. The electrolytic cell with excellent performance must have a uniform electric field distribution and water flow distribution, and can fully meet the requirements of the basic principles of electrochemistry. Whether the electric field is uniform is the key to affecting electrode life. If the electric field is unevenly distributed, the electrochemical reaction in the dense electric field line area of the electrode surface is more intense than in the sparse electric field line area, and it is more susceptible to the damage of side reactions, which shortens the life of the area and affects the service life of the entire electrode. The distribution of water flow affects the electrolysis effect. Because the current efficiency decreases with the decrease of the concentration of organic matter in the wastewater, if the water flow through the electrode surface is uneven, in the area where the flow speed is slow, the organic matter takes longer to electrolyze, the concentration is lower, and the current efficiency is lower. Therefore, the electrolytic effect becomes worse. Bipolar electrodes are used for bipolar electrolysis, and unipolar electrolytic cells cannot be used. Unipolar electrolysis does not need to use bipolar electrolytic cells. Electrolytic cells with rotating electrode technology need to have good transmission characteristics. Electrolytic cells need to withstand pressure, and so on. Therefore, the design and manufacture of electrolytic cells with excellent performance have a great impact on the use of electrochemical water treatment technology.


(3)The power

       The power supply can not only be used to provide the electric field and energy to the electrolytic cell, but also to control the progress of the electrochemical reaction. When the electrolytic cell is working, direct current is used, and direct currents with different waveforms and frequencies are used. The types and proportions of the electrochemical reactions on the electrode surface are different. Therefore, an electrolytic cell needs to be equipped with a DC power source that can provide a suitable waveform and frequency in order to play the role of the electrolytic cell. In summary, the electrochemical water treatment technology is based on the basic principles of electrochemistry, and uses appropriate electrodes, electrolytic cells and power sources to solve the water treatment technology. The selection and manufacture of electrodes, the design and manufacture of electrolytic cells, and the design and selection of power supplies are the key to electrochemical water treatment technology, which is also the embodiment of the core strength of electrochemical water treatment technology companies.
